Job Description: 

Status: Exempt salaried part-time, at-will employee

Hours: negotiable based on candidate’s skills and availability, between half and three-quarters time (20-30 hours a week); including 4 hours required on Sunday mornings

Compensation: commensurate with experience, payable on the 15th and 30th of each month

NOTE: Additional earnings opportunities may be available outside the scope of this position such as singing/playing for weddings, memorial services, and special events.

Benefits: Worker’s compensation as applicable by law; personal expense account; four weeks vacation at the agreed-upon salaried part-time rate; one week continuing education at the agreed-upon salaried part-time rate

Reports to: Senior Pastor (primarily) and Chair of Staff Relations Committee and Co-Moderators (secondarily)

Performance Review: After 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, then annually

Job Summary:

Working collaboratively with staff and volunteers, the Director of Music fosters a welcoming, safe community for musicians of all ages to share their gifts in worship and in fellowship with one another. The Director of Music is responsible for the leadership and direction of all aspects of Calvary’s diverse music program, incorporating various musical genres for a blended style of worship. The Director of Music has a primary focus on worship planning, leading congregational singing, and directing choral and instrumental ensembles for Calvary’s Sunday morning worship service.

Areas of Responsibility

Job Duties:

Programmatic Functions

  • Leads and conducts the Calvary Choir
  • Leads congregational singing for Sunday morning worship
  • Coordinates the leadership and direction of all choral and instrumental ensembles; examples of groups include AVE – smaller choral ensemble; handbells, brass, praise band, etc.
  • Coordinates and directs lay and guest musicians for Sunday worship services and other special services
  • Collaborates with pastoral staff and provides planning support for Sacred Space (Calvary’s Saturday worship service), working with the pastor directly responsible for Sacred Space to ensure musical alignment and avoid conflicts between Saturday and Sunday programs, musicians, rehearsals, sound technicians, spaces needed, etc.
  • Develops, then coordinates the leadership and direction of the children and youth music programs
  • Develops, then coordinates the leadership and direction of the Worship and Music Ministry Team
  • Coordinates and directs seasonal musical programs and concerts (particularly during Advent/Christmas and Lent/Holy Week/Easter)
  • Works on special projects related to music and sound

Administrative Functions

  • Supervises other music staff and sound technicians
  • Works with the Music Librarian to maintain the music library and keep all music licenses up to date
  • Prepares congregational music on Sibelius and works with Operations & Administrative Coordinator in putting music into Order of Worship
  • Arranges music as needed for worship services and musical events
  • Attends Choir Leadership Team meetings
  • Maintains inventory and ensures maintenance of musical instruments
  • Ensures maintenance of Calvary’s sound system
  • Creates and maintains a budget for the music ministry; administers funds designated for the music ministry
  • Contracts with musicians for worship and special events, working with Accountant to ensure payment
  • Prepares appropriate written and electronic communications (e-news, social media, etc.)
  • Regularly communicates with choirs and ensembles about rehearsals, worship, and special programs
  • Works with the Administrative and Operations Coordinator for musical and sound needs for rentals/community partners using our instruments and/or the Music Room, Chapel, Sanctuary, Fellowship Hall, Foot of the Cross Courtyard, and other Calvary spaces
  • Supports the Pastoral Staff in coordinating music and/or musicians for Sacred Space, Healing and Wholeness, and other special services as needed
  • Ensures the Framework of Safety is followed by all adults who work with youth/children

Ministerial Staff Functions

  • Fosters an inclusive, cohesive, team-oriented music ministry among staff, volunteers, and musicians 

  • Provides leadership for Sunday worship services, including oversight and planning, as well as participation
  • Facilitates weekly Sunday morning worship preparation and production
  • Attends weekly worship planning meetings
  • Cultivates service opportunities for musicians to share their gifts in the community
  • Holds designated office hours to meet with and/or rehearse with congregation members or guests as needed
  • Listens to the needs of and cares for those involved in the music program
  • Periodically attends Council meetings, staff meetings, and staff development opportunities (as time and schedule permit and in consultation with the Senior Pastor)

Requirements/Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a music-related field, Master’s degree or equivalent preferred
  • Experience leading music in a church context
  • Strong vocal music skills and proficiency in piano
  • Passion for leading and teaching music (in choral and congregational settings)
  • Passion for creative and collaborative worship planning
  • Ability to sight read music from a lead sheet or score and arrange music
  • Proficiency in Sibelius, or similar music composition software
  • Knowledge of hymnody, praise and worship songs, world music, and music from a variety of genres
  • Experience with children’s and youth music programs
  • Proficiency in technologies related to music and sound and/or ability to learn new technologies quickly
  • Willingness to nurture connections with musicians in the professional musical scene around Denver
  • Theological alignment with Calvary
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
