which is one of the most affordable woods on the market!
But we are not the cheapest supplier of beetle killed wood as some advertise, because…
• We sort to a higher grade of wood quality than others do… a #2 or Better grade vs. a #3 or better grade. If you want a #3 grade, or a mix of the two grades then we will do it for you and it will lower the cost to you… but there is a significant quality difference. Come see for yourself!
• We kiln dry to a lower moisture level, our target is less than 12% though we guarantee 15% or less... which is important in this high and dry climate
o Note- Some suppliers do not kiln dry their beetle kill wood at all, and thus the moisture levels can vary tremendously between each and every board.
This creates uneven shrinking, splitting, twisting, cupping, and bowing of the wood. Often this results in higher losses and more hassles on site.
Note- Though kiln-drying helps tremendously, we still do have some minor issues with our Cabin-grade and Good line of products as we do not dry these lower cost products to 6-8% moisture as we do with our BETTER line of products. Ask for more information!
• We provide extra stock at no charge - Despite our best efforts wood is a natural product so we know not every board is going to be perfect or acceptable, so to allow for the few boards you bought that might ‘go bad’ and maybe even leave you short on finishing your project.
• It simply cost more to produce here in Colorado…
o We are not subsidized like some of our competition,
o The terrain and removal is tough and expensive,
o The trees are badly cracked so our losses and re-manufacturing costs are higher,
o Labor and insurance costs are higher,
o The trees are small in diameter, so there is more labor involved from the logging right through the production of lumber products
We do NOT import from Canada – About 170 mills have shut down in the Western USA since 2007, and we simply feel that we need to cut down our own dead trees and keep the jobs here in our State and in our Country – especially during these tough economic times!
o If part of your goal is to ‘do the right thing’ by buying local timber, then be sure to ask the other guys where their products are coming from!
You can help play a role in utilizing local standing dead timber and capturing the carbon that would other wise be released when these trees rot or burn!
o 70% to 90% of Colorado’s and Western USA forests are expected to die off in the next 10-20 years –
o Maybe less…as the beetles have evolved rapidly and now regenerate TWICE a year instead of once. This is VERY bad news!
o Our dead forests are expected to release hundreds of millions of tons of carbon –
Using this timber as wood products captures that carbon
o Our mountain communities and infrastructure of water supplies, power lines, communication grids, roadways, recreational areas and wildlife are in danger of fire and falling trees, as well as greatly increased and rapid snow melt and erosion that will affect our wild and aquatic life adversely.
