Job Description

JOB TITLE: Controller


REPORTS TO: Executive Director


As a key member of the management team and reporting to the Executive Director, the Controller of Colorado Legal Services ensures accountability and effective administration in all finance functions, adhering to generally accepted accounting principles, regulatory and grant requirements, and nonprofit business practices. This position directs and oversees the finance, accounting, budgeting, cash management, and risk management functions of the organization.


· Establish and implement short- and long-range finance department goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures. Monitor financial performance and develop solutions to business challenges.

· Provide timely and accurate analysis of financial condition, financial reports, budgets and financial trends for effective communications with internal management, the Finance/Audit Committee and the Board of Directors.
· Act as lead staff for Finance/Audit/Investment Committee.

· Supervise Assistant Controller and Bookkeeper

· Ensure timeliness, accuracy and usefulness of financial and management reporting for decision-making.

· Implement and maintain effective internal controls that comply with generally accepted accounting principles and applicable federal, state and local regulatory laws and rules for financial reporting and IRS 990 filing.
· Manage organizational cash flow including periodic forecasting.

· Ensure timely and quality processes for audits, tax returns, and other compliance reporting.

· Act as primary contact for banks, insurance companies, and other vendors.

· Coordinate and lead the annual audit processes.


· Bachelors’ degree in accounting or related field

· CPA and/or MBA preferred

· Five to seven years progressive accounting and financial reporting experience.

· Three to five years as a Controller or a senior-level finance or accounting position. Nonprofit experience highly desirable, including experience with government grants and accounting for restricted funds.

Special Skills/Knowledge:

· Demonstrated excellence in managing finance, accounting, budgeting, control and reporting at a nonprofit organization.

· Knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and the federal Uniform Guidance.

· A collaborative and flexible style with an ability to coordinate multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.

· An effective communicator, with strong oral, written and interpersonal skills.

· Advanced computer proficiency with Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

· Advanced knowledge of accounting software, experience with Abila MIP Fund Accounting a plus.
