Be careful buying from private individuals or companies that sell ALL types of fitness equipment as your “good deal” may need excessive work AFTER you make your purchase. Finally, be cautious buying from obscure bike manufacturers and sellers of home version bikes as these bike types are typically NOT commercial grade. MY bikes are commercial grade, FULLY tuned. These bikes are ready to ride; they need nothing except a willing participant! I am the foremost authority on this AND most other bikes. The only bikes I would consider buying from e-bay or any other online avenue would be bikes that are A) Commercial grade. B) Bikes that have been completely refurbished by someone who understands the bike, is mechanically competent and who actually instructs or at the very least takes indoor cycling classes regularly. C) Buying the bike from someone who knows what the hell they are talking about. Just because you are buying a bike from a used fitness equipment company, doesn’t mean the bike is tuned properly, it also doesn’t mean that necessary parts have been replaced. There are plenty of other bikes besides mine. Just be very careful!

Save BIG $$$$ on Gym memberships and gas! And get the biggest payoff out there doing Spinning at home. BUT, be careful buying based on price alone!

What’s involved in the re-assembly process? The re-assembly process takes at most 15-30 minutes. When I prep the bike, I check, tune and adjust everything. Additionally, I lubricate all hardware associated with the assembly process and I include tools for re-assembly. There are detailed assembly instructions included with EVERY bike I sell, many with pictures and illustrations. When you unpack my bikes ,there are usually 5-6 major parts that need to be screwed to the mainframe and the bike is READY to ride! PLUS, if you need my help I’m an email or a phone call away. I’ve sold literally hundreds of bikes and I’ve gotten maybe 5-6 calls where my help was needed. Which is exactly why I go to such extremes to make it all so easy!

Lifetime Parts and Labor Warranty

When you have been doing Spinners longer than ANYONE else on the planet as I have, doing this is easy. I will cover the bike for as long as you own it against defects in workmanship. If you effectively take care of your bike as prescribed/described in my accompanying comprehensive technical manuals; your bike should last you a lifetime! There are of course, normal wear items on the bike such as pedals, saddles, water bottle cages and resistance pads. Those items will wear eventually wear out and you will have to but replacements. However, the ENTIRE remaining components of the bike including the bearings, cranks, flywheel, resistance assemblies, seat & handlebar towers should last a lifetime. If they fail due to defects in workmanship, I will replace the part and ship it for FREE !

IS IT A COMMERCIAL BIKE, OR A HOME VERSION? Heres a clue about what to look for in terms of “Is it a home version bike”? First off, if the bike weighs around 70-75 pounds, it’s a home version, do you get free DVD’s or video’s, it’s a home version bike, Do they mention the manufacturer; Star Trac, Schwinn, Lemond? Remember the weight factor, it’s HUGE in determining whether it’s a home version. NO commercial bike weighs 70-80 pounds. If you buy one of these and you think it’s gonna feel like the bike at the gym, you’re in for a big surprise!

*The “History” of the Wheel* Schwinn was the original manufacturer of the Johnny G Spinner series of bikes, together, Johnny G’s company; Mad Dogg Athletics(The company that owns Spinning) partnered with Schwinn and together they produced several hundred thousand bikes. Reebok came along and tried to compete with the Cycle Reebok program with limited success. Also, at that time Star Trac produced their V-bike to compete against Schwinn. Then about 5-6 years ago, Schwinn Cycling and Fitness bought GT bicycles and after only 1-2 years they were plunged into bankruptcy. They couldn’t produce Spin bikes and Mad Dogg Athletics couldn’t license gyms and fitness facilities. Sooooo; Mad Dogg sued Schwinn, and retrieved the Spinning name and took it to Star Trac.This was roughly 4-5 years ago. Now Star Trac is the official manufacturer of the Johnny G Spinner series of bikes. In this same time period, Schwinn fitness was bought up by Nautilus Health and Fitness Group. Now Nautilus produces their own line of Spin bikes, calling them IC’s or Indoor Cycles. They make the IC Pro, The IC Elite and their flagship bike, the Evolution.

WARNING* OTHER BIKES FOR SALE – WHAT TO WATCH OUT FOR

Schwinn Johnny G Spinner SE (Special Edition)

This bike was only produced for about 6 months. One of the coolest “Looking” Bikes out there BUT, it does have a “Smart Release”; which is a mechanical nightmare, AND because of the low grade Taiwan Stainless Steel frame material, ANY screw, nut or bolt that you remove or turn to do an adjustment or make a repair gets stripped. Finally, Schwinn stopped making this bike because of frame failure, the APEX of the tower corners (both Seat and Handlebar) splits at a certain height, making this unit not only dangerous, BUT unusable.

Schwinn Evolution – With RED Handlebars This bike pops up on E-bay all the time. This was the Original Evolution once Schwinn was purchased by Nautilus and recovered their indoor cycling program. Great looking bike, HOWEVER, the bearing assembly in the crank (AKA The Bottom Bracket is nearly impossible to work on, in other words, if the bike needs to have this part replaced, this bike will usually be unfixable. ALSO, the evolutions are notorious for bad clear coating on the paint, the sweat from the riders stain the clearcoat and the paint looks blotchy under direct light. By far,the biggest issue with this bike IS the nearly impossible bearing issues with this bike. I KNOW this because I wrote the Tech manual for this bike AND I am a consultant to Schwinn.

In the beginning of the indoor cycling craze, Schwinn dominated the industry with the Johnny G Spinner series bikes. Star Trac did their best to compete with the development of the V-bike. The original V-bike is by far the roughest riding bike out there. PLUS, the market is being flooded with old V-bikes. You can tell the old V-bike because it has a NON perimeter weighted flywheel. The New redesigned V-bike is better looking AND it has a perimeter weighted flywheel. Be careful of companies showing a picture of the new bike and then selling you an older version bike. I get offers ALL the time to buy huge lots of these older model V-bikes for as low as $25.00 per bike!!! I wont touch em’ because they are SOOO difficult to refurbish. The drive train on these bikes are almost always fried because these bikes were notorious for coming out of the box with the drivetrain set WAAAAY too tight and never adjusted, just used up, burned out then turned over for new bikes.

Cycle REEBOK Cycle Reebok was formed after one of Johhny G original employees, left the company, from what I’ve been told on unhappy terms. He went to Reebok and they designed the bike together. I know this because at that time I was a consultant to Cycle Reebok. Facilities bought the Cycle Reebok bikes because of rock bottom prices or because they weren’t happy trying to deal with Schwinn, who at the that time had the impossible task of trying to keep up with the demands from an EXPLODING Market. Cycle REEBOK is by far the worst choice in Terms of buying a used bike. I would not take these bike to refurb and resell if the seller PAID ME to take them. PLUS, finding parts is a NIGHTMARE.

New Schwinn Evolution w/ Black Handlebars This is the new improved Evolution, BUT; still notorious for coming with an over tightened drivetrain. Nautilus Schwinn PAYS me to go into clubs and TUNE brand new bikes for them. ONLY VIP clubs get this treatment, WHY? Because my services are expensive, so not every deal can go down with these extra costs like pro level bike set up. If you are a fanatic, you already know that brand new shiny bikes can feel and ride horrible, and its not unusual for the oldest, crappiest looking bike to actually ride the best. This is why SOOO many eBayers are willing to pay extra……..They want that PERFECT, smooth buttery ride, AND long term trouble free ownership. This a GREAT bike, BUT finding someone to dial it in, in my experience is NEARLY impossible.

Do not buy your bike based on price alone, You WILL be sorry in most cases!

Is it a good deal if I buy it from someone who claims they only used it a few times and then it hasn’t been used for a couple of years?

Be careful, just cuz they look good, doesnt mean they ride well. If someone buys it brand new, puts it in their home, uses it 4 or 5 times and it ends up being a $1000.00 clothes hanger and sits dormant for 3 or 4 years, thats not good because everythings going be DRY and that may mean parts replacement and retuning and adjustment.

It’s not a Schwinn or a Star Trac, but it looks good in the pictures, AND the price is REALLY reasonable, should I consider buying it?

Be aware of the many obscure brands of bikes,(Loius Garneau, Forza, Jespe, Softride,Giant, Original Star Trac V-Bikes,etc…….) they usually have lower quality control standards and typically feel completely different from the commercial Spin bikes you may be used to in your classes at the gyms. Plus many of these companies have TRIED to get their bikes into the COMMERCIAL FITNESS industry but the bikes were NOT popular or well received. Remember this; Schwinn and Star Trac and Lemond account for close to 80% of the commercial bikes used in today’s marketplace, these are the brands the gyms and fitness facilities choose for everyday use.

Its BRAND new and in the box, and the price is almost HALF of retail!

Everyone wants to get a good price, its in our blood, we ALL want a good deal. Heres the bottom line. If you find a 1200.00 Schwinn Evolution brand new ,in the box for 700.00, you get it shipped to your doorstep, you put it together, and it rides like a chainsaw, what is your next move? Your husband or boyfriend (lets hope you don’t have both: ) trys to adjust it, still feels crappy, the local bicycle shop “tunes it up” more $, still not right, the local fitness store tries, still doesn’t feel right……….How much is all this frustration worth to you. You see, these bikes do NOT come out of the box tuned up and feeling buttery and smooth, That’s why Star Trac , Schwinn AND Lemond ALL use me and my Company to do their VIP builds and service. EVERYBODY else gets the wham bam build. When you buy a bike online, the last person to touch that bike BEFORE you crack open the box, is the guy or gal in Taiwan who is sealing the box for the long ride over to the states. So, if price is ALL you care about, it doesn’t matter who you buy it from. BUT if you want a bike that has been fully tuned, and WILL be FULLY tuned when you open the box, consider buying from me!

It’s a Schwinn Johnny G Spinner or a Star Trac V-bike for $300 or $400, is that a good price? The pictures don’t look like ACTUAL pictures, they look like they “harvested” from another website, should I be concerned?

If you looking at a Commercial Spin Bike, and its been in a gym for 2,3,4 years or more, that bike needs to be torn down and rebuilt from the ground up, before its resold, otherwise you are inheriting someone’s shot out worn out bike. My refurbs ARE torn completely apart and rebuilt FROM THE GROUND UP! I rebuild these bikes like I’m going to keep them for myself, PLUS, I give a lifetime warranty on the frame, 3 years on parts, AND lifetime e-mail and phone tech support.

Do these high end commercial bikes ever wear out?

A good commercial indoor bike never wears out, it just starts looking really really crappy and most of the incidental parts start to wear out. That’s why gyms usually replace their bikes.

I’m safe buying from a Used Fitness Equipment store, right? As far as I can tell in my experience, buying a Spinner from a Used equipment fitness store, ESPECIALLY ONLINE, is a total crap shoot. Here’s just a couple of SOLID reasons……… The Warranty – You either get NO warranty, the bikes are sold “as-is”, OR you get a warranty that has no value, a 90 day warranty is worthless. My warranty on my commercial bikes is always LIFETIME, END OF STORY!! The Mechanics or Techs that do the work – Most Used Gym Equipment Stores focus on two things a bike that looks good, AND an attractive price. The Bike HAS to be tuned to feel good, and if its even slightly used, it has to be torn down and EVERYTHING checked. This happening in a used fitness equipment store is highly unlikely…….why because most fitness store personnel would know where to start. REMEMBER ,my bikes have lifetime warranties!!!!

If I buy a bike online and I have a problem, who do I call to fix it? This ladies and gentlemen, is the million dollar question. Local bicycle shops usually always struggle with repairs on indoor group cycles. Especially used ones that on the inside, where you cannot see, the bike is FULL of rust, and all the hardware is dry and Unserviceable. This is why I tear even the new bikes down before I sell them. EVERYTHING associated with adjustment or repair is scrutinized BEFORE I sell the bike, ALWAYS, EVERYTIME.

What do you do before you sell your bikes?

EVERY used bike I sell is torn completely apart, down to the frame. Then the rebuilding process begins. Corrosion is removed, and those areas are repainted. ANY and ALL parts that are even remotely suspect are replaced. When I am finished, my refurbs feel as good or BETTER than any brand new bike out of the box.

Will my bike get out of adjustment when its shipped?

I use only the best materials when shipping, so your bike comes out of the box, just like it went in, completely tuned and ready to ride.

How hard will it be for me to put together once it arrives?

I include detailed assembly instructions, plus factory supplied instructions; if available and one of my Ultimate Tech manuals. Most people have the bike together in under 30 minute, I even supply most tools to re-assemble the bike. And you can always call me or shoot me an e-mail if you need me!

Considering Purchasing a bike (Schwnn or Star Trac) with a RED flywheel?

If A Schwinn Johnny G Spinner OR Star Trac Johnny G Spinner has a RED FLYWHEEL, it is an Elite model. The Elite model has a clutch, which is a TOTAL nightmare if it has come from a gym or a commercial setting. WHY? Typically, the person lubing the drivetrain will oil the chain in a conventional method, if at all, and when they do this the clutch gets contaminated and the rider feels nothing but slipping in the bike. I know this cuz I’m the foremost expert on Smart Release ( the “name” of this system.) I’ve written the “book” on Smart Release, which companies like Schwinn and Star Trac give to their out field service techs to correct the problems. The big deal, the really big deal is that the only way to correct this contamination, is to completely dis-assemble the flywheel and clutch mechanism to remove the oil from the clutch plates. I would guess the person selling these bikes wouldn’t even know what you were talking about if you were to ask about this issue, sooooooooooooo, BE CAREFUL with that “good deal”.

I called the seller and they said everything is good and the bike is “serviced”.

No matter what the price, you have the right to ask questions. Ask the seller if the drivechain has been replaced. Ask them how many resistance pads the bike has and if they have been replaced. Star Tracs have one pad, Schwinns have two. Ask if the chain has been tensioned and the flywheel has been checked for alignment. Folks these are the VERY basics. Also, if the bike is new, ask if they have tech support available if you have a problem. You have to understand the MECHANICAL Physiology of these bikes to help the end user through any issues or problems.

Here’s something else about used bikes. If someone cuts and pastes the bike spec’s from the company website and says stuff like; This is a great bike, this is a professional spin bike, blah, blah blah, come on man; this bike is 3 or 4 years old, Ask them in an email what have they done to the bike, have they aligned the flywheel have they tensioned the chain, have they or do they even know how to treat the resistance pads? Treating the resistance pads is one of the simplest things a person can do BEFORE selling you the bike. You may pay a 200.00 or 300.00 dollar price for a used bike, but you may be SO frustrated with the operating condition of the bike, that you may NOT want to ride it. And forget about contacting the local bicycle shop to dial it in for you, that is a serious LONG shot, same goes with Fitness stores. The Guys that are “certified” by Schwinn and Star Trac and so on typically are the ones creating the most business for me in the gyms. You HAVE to ride these bikes regularly, either in class or as an instructor and WORK on them over and over to understand the mechanical psychology that makes them tick and feel the way they do.

Here’s something to think long and hard about: You may find a bike for less money, BUT there is no way to measure the frustration associated with the delivery of a bike with problems, finding a good tech to "fix" something you should never have had to deal with in the first place. My bikes are what you want, right out of the box. EVEN brand new bikes, out of the box are generally not buttery and smooth. The bitterness of problems remains long after the sweetness of a low price.

I am the number 1 bike tech in the industry; I've tuned thousands of bikes for the top fitness facilities offering indoor group cycling.( I tune on the average;1000 bikes per month) I am a consultant to Schwinn, Star Trac, Lemond, Golds Gyms International and many more. I am the only technical presenter for Madd Dogg Athletics (The company that owns Spinning®) at WSSC’s (World Spinning Conferences). I have written four (4) comprehensive preventative maintenance Tech manuals for sell for 50.00 per copy and used by bike techs and fitness facilities around the world. Come on gang ,I’m just qualifying: ) Even if you don't buy a bike from me, give me a call if you’re not sure about what you’re buying. You could buy a brand new "pro" believing it's the same bike the gyms use and you might end up with a bike that weighs 50 pounds less and has a shaky "home version" feel! Bottom line; buy a commercial grade bike, with a commercial grade, “just like in the gyms feel”. I’ve consulted with the top manufacturers to teach their engineers how to repair their own bikes. Again, if you’re not sure, give me a call. If I sound confident, it’s because I work very hard to be the best at what I do. Used fitness equipment companies typically do nothing more than clean up the equipment and do minor adjustments before you get it. Do you think the $10.00 an hour techs at these “We sell everything under the sun” used fitness equipment companies REALLY understand HOW the bikes are supposed to feel? One major advantage you’ll get from my company is that I am an active Indoor Group Cycling Instructor. Why is this important? Simple, because I know how the bike is supposed to feel. How many times have you gone to a gym and the bike you end up on feels like a chainsaw. This is usually because the person doing the adjusting of the bikes doesn’t know how the bike is supposed to feel in the first place. My bikes are like butter. I adjust EVERY bike COMPLETELY before it goes out. If you love Spinning® ; buy the Schwinn Johnny G Spinner Pro(R), this IS the bike for your home. Heres the bottom line: Keep the bike clean, wipe it down regularly,and this bike will provide you with YEARS of good use. Here’s a word about warranty: These bikes are commercial, meaning they are designed for heavy use inside a fitness facility. There isn't much to go wrong. You will at some point need to replace the saddle, they wear out. The resistance pads wear out, 5-10 years of heavy home use will cause the flywheel bearings and bottom bracket assembly to fail, again needing replacement. My bikes have been gone through completely. If any of these parts needed replacement, I would have done it BEFORE it goes into a box for shipping. Most of the other parties selling bikes won't even know what a bottom bracket is or why the resistance pads need replacing! MY BIKES HAVE LIFETIME WARRANTYS!!!

Don’t get me wrong, I DO believe there are capable resellers you can buy a bike from besides myself. I don’t however know of ANYONE else who will give you a tech manual (considered the bible for bike maintenance by a whole lotta’ clubs around the globe), Lifetime e-mail and phone tech support, Music to ride to,etc..

Be careful buying from private individuals or companies that sell ALL types of fitness equipment as your “good deal” may need excessive work AFTER you make your purchase. Finally, be cautious buying from obscure bike manufacturers and sellers of home version bikes as these bike types are typically NOT commercial grade. MY bikes are commercial grade, FULLY tuned. These bikes are ready to ride; they need nothing except a willing participant! I am the foremost authority on this AND most other bikes. The only bikes I would consider buying from e-bay or any other online avenue would be bikes that are A) Commercial grade. B) Bikes that have been completely refurbished by someone who understands the bike, is mechanically competent and who actually instructs or at the very least takes indoor cycling classes regularly. C) Buying the bike from someone who knows what the hell they are talking about. Just because you are buying a bike from a used fitness equipment company, doesn’t mean the bike is tuned properly, it also doesn’t mean that necessary parts have been replaced. There are plenty of other bikes besides mine. Just be very careful!

Have had Schwinn AC Performance since late August 2010. I have used it about 3-4 times a week. I was able to put it together with no trouble and it performs as you have described. I reviewed your video on its care and orderd grease and lube but have not used either as the bike seems to be operating well. Review of Star Trac NXT : June 2010 Purchased from Jeff Wimmer at Studio Cycles in December 2009 This is a review of the Star Trac NXT Spinner Cycle purchased from Jeff Wimmer of Studio Cycle in December of 2010. I have postponed my review so that I could evaluate the NXT after it was fully broken in. Before purchasing the NXT I had looked into the Lemond Revmaster Pro, the Keiser M3 Indoor Cycle, and the full line of Schwinn Spinners. Since a wanted a true spinner I opted for either a Schwinn or Star Trac. I wanted the bike to feel more like a road bike with a chain so I decided not to invest into the new magnetic braking systems of the Keiser M3 or the Schwinn AC, or the belt drive of the Lemond Revmaster. I always buy top of the line with durability, performance and life span of the equipment as top priorities. I viewed all of the videos on Youtube and repeatedly found the Star Trac NXT in the highest percentage of the gyms. I evaluated the specs of all the bikes and finally decided upon the Star Trac NXT. Jeff stated that it was important to have the NXT tuned properly so after a couple of phone conversations I finally made the big leap and purchased an NXT from Jeff. After Jeff personally tuned up my NXT, he double packed the bike and had it delivered to my home. To be quite frank the only way the bike would have been damaged in delivery would have been if a fork lift traveling at high speed rammed the box. I’m serious; the outer box afforded almost guaranteed security against damage in transit. Over the last 25 years I have owned a Monarch 818 Ergometer which required the replacement of at least six cranks and three paint jobs to stop corrosion. The Monarch 818 used a one piece crank with poor metallurgy which resulted in the six crank failures. The powder coat over the metal alloy was insufficient to prevent sweat from corroding the bike resulting in the paint jobs. Other than that the Monarch was a good bike, but I would never buy another one of those because of the hassle involved in the maintenance. This was one of the reasons I purchased the NXT. It has an aluminum frame which is very corrosion resistant. It also uses a standard type bottom bracket with dedicated cranks which I can guarantee will never fail, since they are industrial in construction. The first crank I ever broke (Bodyguard Ergometer) resulted in a trip to the emergency room. The crank broke at the pedal with the sharp edge slicing through my calf as my foot with pedal attached came to the floor. Luckily the Monarch only failed near the bottom bracket portion of the crank. This was one of the main reasons for purchasing the NXT. I did not want broken cranks or the necessity of regular paint jobs. So what is my opinion of the NXT after riding it for six months? To be perfectly honest with you, the Star Trac NXT is the single finest piece of exercise equipment that I have ever purchased over the last thirty years, and I have purchased thousands of dollars worth. The build quality of the NXT is second to none. Star Trac did not spare any expense at selecting the finest parts for its construction. The welds are literally perfect and the alignment of the frame and attached parts are also. The bike rides like a road bike with just I hint of chain noise, but no more than a high performance road bike. One of the so called advantages of belt drive and magnetic systems are the reduction of vibration. This was my only concern with staying with the chain drive. When Jeff tunes up the bike, he adjusts the chain a little tight which gives some vibration initially if one is not cranking smoothly. This is caused by the chain not being broken in and the tightness of the chain. After a period of about 30 to 60 days this disappears with the advantage that one has learned how to cycle perfectly smoothly. Out of the box the vibration is totally absent if one is cranking properly. It just becomes a bit more forgiving after the break in period. The Lemond Revmaster with the belt drive is smooth no matter how you crank. I see this as a disadvantage in that it can lead to ‘very’ sloppy technique. The NXT is like a Ferrari in that it tells you how good your technique is whether you are in the saddle or standing. I will now rate the different aspects of the NXT. just purchased two of your manuals and I just dont know how to thank you. No one who we have hired to work on the bikes comes even close to the preventive maintenance or repair that you have suggested. Went thru our 25 bikes and pulled five of them off the floor immediately with all kinds of issues. The rest have minor issues pads, chains etc that I was able to deal with. Still have not tackled the smart release on several of the bikes I have pulled. Anyways I have informed the owner of the status of his bikes and he would like to discuss more with you on purchasing either the pre-owned that we talked about or other options. Jeff, I met you on Friday, April 2. I had stopped by the Lincoln Bl. location just to look in the window and you were in there working on some of the bikes. I told you I had my hip replaced 4 weeks before and was looking for something to rehab my new hip. Thank you for taking your time (I know you had a lot to do that night) and basically educating me about spinning and the bikes. You told me to wait and come back that week end, check out all the bikes and see which one appealed to me. To tell you the truth, if I could have afforded it, those Schwinn AC were the smoothest things on the floor. On Sunday, I ended up buying one of the older grey Star Trac V bikes. It is a gem. Smooth, steady, and a pleasure to ride. My hip has made twice as much progress as before the bike (I ride twice a day) and so I want to thank you again for spending that time with me. Hey Jeff, Just wanted to drop you a couple of lines to say "Thanks" for making my bike buying experience a breeze. Just as you said, the bike arrived nicely double boxed and came out of the box ready for pounding. I can not say enough about the entire buying experience from you, as opposed to the nightmare I had when ordering from one of the larger companies. I originally ordered the bike from an outfit in Wisconsin. 10 days after I ordered the bike, I e-mailed the company to find out what the status was and when the bike would be shipped. Received an e-mail the next day stating " I'm sorry Sherri, but the bike you ordered is not available, but we can contact Star Trac and drop ship in a few more days". Well, long story short, I contacted them personally by phone and was appauled by their rudeness and lack of interest.
