Niza Knoll Gallery hosts 5th Annual Gone to the Dogs Juried Exhibition
August 16 - September 28, 2013

Sirius, also known as the “dog star” is the brightest star in the night sky and is part of the constellation, Canis Major or “Greater Dog”. In the summer, Sirius rises and sets with the sun, and the ancients believed that its heat added to the heat of the sun, creating a stretch of hot and sultry weather they dubbed, the “dog days”. Every year during this sizzling stretch Niza Knoll Gallery pays it’s own tribute to the dog in which she exhibits the best and the brightest artwork from the constellation of local artists who were asked to submit original works in any medium depicting the dog. The gallery invites dog lovers to escape the heat and visit this year’s show that runs August 16-September 28, 2013 at 915 Santa Fe Drive including the following special events:

Opening and Artists’ reception: Friday, August 16, 6-9 pm
First Friday: September 6, 5-8 pm With adoptable dogs from MaxFund
Third Friday: September 21, 5-8 pm

This years Jurors include DD LaRue and Dana Hawk. LaRue is a self-taught award winning, mixed-media artist whose work has been featured in galleries, publications and TV, most recently in a March issue of the Denver Post. Using a combination of sturdy, lightweight media, DD creates striking free-standing interior and wall sculptures which explore the complex relationships between animals, man and their environment.  Sometimes whimsical and sometimes challenging, DD's eye-catching animals combine a fearless point of view with a respect for the dignity inherent in all animal species.

Dana Hawk captures the essence of all her animals—household pets and farm animals alike —with the same warmth and character. Dana’s delightful images may be fresh in the minds of visitors to Niza Knoll gallery as she was featured in a successful one women show in 2012 and has participated in the gallery’s annual dog-themed juried exhibit for three years winning “Best 2D in Show” in 2012. She currently lives in New York but will be visiting Denver to participate as a juror for this exhibit.

MaxFund is No-kill animal shelter established in May of 1988. They take in and nurture any animal with no known owner and finds homes for these animals once they have recovered. For more information visit
